Following with our previous article about Smallmouth Bass fishing in Lake of the Woods, it’s important to mention that in large bodies of water, such as LOTW, the temperature might vary from one end to the other, so Smallmouth Bass may not all spawn at the same time.
With fourteen thousand islands, and huge variations in depth, anglers can expect bass to spawn in waves during the warmest tree/four weeks of the year.
The spawning of Smallmouth Bass is a fifteen day window, during which a male and a female will pair to make and guard a nest, called bed. In Lake of the Woods, water temperature will peak at around 87 °F, sometime during the second part of August. Once September comes around, and weather conditions start to change anticipating the fall season, Smallmouth Bass will leave their beds and start habitating the numerous shallow humps and reefs around the lake.
During this time of the year, anglers targeting Smallmouth Bass in Lake of the Year should focus on rock piles and reefs, ideally with a “flat-ish” top, preferably between 10 and 6 feet deep. Depending on the weather conditions and time of the day, fish shallower or deeper until you find a pattern.
